As we observe World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, I cannot help but think of my Nani and all she stands for in my eyes. Every time I conjure her image, she serves as a poignant reminder of the immense love, wisdom, and guidance that grandparents can offer. Unfortunately, too many in the autumn of their lives face the stark reality of abuse, neglect, and mistreatment, often at the hands of those closest to them. In fact, according to the WHO, approximately 15.7% of people aged 60 years and older experience some form of elder abuse globally, with a great many cases going unreported and ‘normalised’ within the closed walls of homes and nursing homes, often with family members or caregivers the perpetrators of this abuse.
Nani’s unwavering dedication to nurturing my independence, resilience, and moral compass stands in sharp contrast to the harsh realities of elder abuse. While Nani’s love and care empowered me to reach my full potential, countless older adults suffer from disrespect, verbal abuse, financial exploitation, and even physical harm. My life is a testament to the profound impact that elders can have when treated with dignity, respect, and compassion. Indeed, I am greatly thankful that in Indian society we often see grandparents and older adults play a pivotal role in shaping the lives of younger generations.
On this World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, let us honour the countless grandparents like Nani, who selflessly pour their love, wisdom, and guidance into the lives of their grandchildren. Their sacrifices and contributions deserve to be celebrated, not met with cruelty or indifference. As a society, we must take a stand against the abuse and mistreatment of our elders, ensuring that they can age with the dignity, respect, and care they deserve. Let this narrative inspire us to create a world where every older adult can experience the unconditional love and support that Nani provided, free from the scourge of elder abuse.
By raising awareness, implementing robust protection measures, and fostering a culture of respect and empathy towards our elders, we can work towards a future where stories like mine are the norm, and elder abuse becomes a relic of the past.
