Tata is no stranger to having diverse business interests, but its latest move might well cause a splash in India’s Bottled Water segment, which is valued at US$5.55bn in 2022, and expected to grow annually by 4.97% (CAGR 2022-2026).
Tata Consumer wants to pick up a stake in India’s biggest and most recognisable bottled water brand, Parle-owned Bisleri. is comes hot on the heels of reports that Tata was looking to acquire up to ‑ve brands. Nestle, Danone, and Reliance Retail too had expressed an interest in acquiring a stake, but their interest trickled away with talks not materialising.
Tata already owns a bevy of Bottled Water brands, such as Tata Water Plus, Tata Copper+, and Himalayan, to name a few. But Bisleri is a titan of the industry, accounting for 32% of India’s organised Bottled Water market, and a distribution network it has carefully cultivated over decades to give it a massive footprint. Ally that with Tata’s own market share, and a behemoth emerges.
