By announcing that satellite connectivity will be one of the features of the upcoming iPhone 14, Apple has given a massive shot in the arm to the burgeoning satellite phone ecosystem. By allowing users to send SOS and location data when they go o-grid, this innovation could quite literally be a lifesaver, especially in remote areas such as mountains, deserts, or out at sea, where users might struggle most to contact emergency services. So how does it all work? Apple explored various partnerships, before zeroing in on Globalstar for an exclusive deal that’ll give the tech titan 85% of network capacity. But Apple isn’t the only one hopping onto a ride into outer space; T-Mobile and SpaceX have recently announced a partnership to provide satellite coverage, and Huawei and Google are also working on satellite tech integration.
